What is this?
Pixel-Mart.com is a "pixel ad" website. Everyone is welcome to buy pixels on the homepage. When you purchase pixels, you are granted the right to place your own pixel ad in the space you have paid for. A pixel ad consists of a graphic image, tooltip text, and a website link.
All pixel ads will remain on Pixel-Mart.com until January 1, 2011, and possibly even longer than that! Some terms and conditions apply.
Here at Pixel-Mart.com, pixels are purchased in blocks measuring 20 pixels by 20 pixels. Each block of pixel space costs $20 USD. That translates to a cost of 5 cents per pixel!
The first pixel ad site on the web was The Million Dollar Homepage. It was created by a fine young British chap named Alex Tew, with the express goal of raising one million US dollars. (And he did!)
Since the Million Dollar Homepage went up, hundreds of copycat sites have appeared. Pixel-Mart.com, of course, is one of them! For a good overview of the pixel ad phenomenon, visit The Pixel Wars.
- The "pixel ads" you see on the Pixel-Mart.com homepage have been clicked by curious visitors more than 59,094 times in total!
- The large 20x20 block size is intended to keep clutter to a minimum. In the long run, I hope this format preserves the readability and effectiveness of each pixel ad.
- The low price of $20 per block makes it possible to afford even larger advertisements.
- All pixel ads will be displayed in lossless 24-bit PNG format, for the best possible image quality. Your pixel ad will have as much color fidelity as you put into it; I won't introduce any additional artifacts due to compression.
Pixel-Mart.com is run by a guy from Canada named Jeff Preshing. I got such a kick out of the Million Dollar Homepage and its community of derivative pixel ad sites, that I just had to make one of my own.
